Concrete grinders use diamond or sometimes tungsten to grind the concrete layer. Most people use concrete grinders to remove very small amounts of concrete, or to remove glue and blemishes in concrete. You can expect that in most cases, using ordinary grinding wheels and abrasive tools, you will be able to take off about 1/16 inch of concrete.
Let us look at an example. Suppose you want to remove 1/8 inch of concrete to make the concrete smooth, remove a little glue from the previous floor, and then prepare to use the new surface. You may only need to pass it once to peel the glue off the floor and take a small amount of concrete. This will provide a smoother surface for your next pass. Your next aisle will take off about 1/16 inch of concrete, and your third aisle will take off another 1/16 inch. This can almost bring you down to the level required for the entire floor.
If you need to stand up or walk around a pillar, you may need to do more work. Some grinders will grind the edges so that you are flush with the wall. Other grinders will leave some lips behind, and you may need to use a smaller hand grinder for cleaning.
Concrete grinding is generally considered a finishing or repair process. If the contractor wants to remove too much concrete, the concrete contractor usually recommends removing the concrete and re-pouring the concrete.
